AUSTIN - Authorities said one student died in a hazmat situation at a West Campus apartment building, Austin Fire Department and Austin-Travis County EMS said.

AFD and EMS initially responded to 21 Pearl for a cardiac arrest call. The student, a man in his 20s, died at the scene and 11 others required medical attention. EMS said in a tweet that six people - two women in their 20s, two men in their 20s, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 40s - were transported for additional medical attention. Five others refused transport.

Authorities said there were signs indicating that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was present in the apartment. Hydrogen sulfide is also referred to as "sewer gas" and AFD said it can be lethal in high concentrations.

Some residents were sheltered in place while crews began ventilating the building. The University of Texas Dean of Students said on Twitter around 7:30 p.m. that students were being allowed back into the building.

AFD and EMS said it is possible this is a case of a chemical suicide. The name of the man who died is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Wth? This sounds ridiculous. Sheltered in place with sewer gas killing people?
