There has been a lot of talk lately about a megaquake hitting the Pacific Northwest. In June they are going to conduct a earthquake/tsunami drill that will involve 6000 emergency personnel. We all know what happens every time they conduct a "drill!!"

Nearly 6,000 emergency, military personnel to conduct PNW megaquake exercise

The last damaging earthquake in Washington struck 15 years ago, on Feb. 28, 2001.

The next one is scheduled for June 7.

The ground isn’t expected to actually shake this spring. But nearly 6,000 emergency and military personnel will pretend it is during a four-day exercise to test response to a seismic event that will dwarf the 2001 Nisqually quake: A Cascadia megaquake and tsunami.

Called “Cascadia Rising,” the exercise will be the biggest ever conducted in the Pacific Northwest. Which is fitting, because a rupture on the offshore fault called the Cascadia Subduction Zone could be the biggest natural disaster in U.S. history.

Conducting successful life-saving and life-sustaining response operations in the aftermath of a Cascadia Subduction Zone disaster will hinge on the effective coordination and integration of governments at all levels – cities, counties, state agencies, federal officials, the military, tribal nations – as well as non-government organizations and the private sector.  One of the primary goals of Cascadia Rising is to train and test this whole community approach to complex disaster operations together as a joint team.

The culminating event will be a four-day functional exercise to occur June 7-10, 2016. Emergency Operations and Coordination Centers (EOC/ECCs) at all levels of government and the private sector will activate to coordinate simulated field response operations both within their jurisdictions and also with neighboring communities, state EOCs, FEMA, and major military commands.

And this is why they are conducting the drill.....

The quake could displace a million people from northern California to southern Canada. Large parts of Seattle, Portland and Vancouver will crumble. In coastal towns, roads and bridges will likely be impassable, stranding whole communities. The region's economy could collapse. Rebuilding might take years, even decades.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – BC will host the first-ever provincially led earthquake response exercise to test the new provincial earthquake immediate response plan.

It will involve the real-time deployment of the Provincial Coordination team and the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team with multiple levels of government also taking part along with First Nations groups.

BC’s Attorney General Suzanne Anton says Port Alberni was selected as the location due to its seismic history.

This drill is set to start June 7 as well, must be co-ordinating with the US.
