Dr. Seuss Museum Mural To Be Replaced Amid Claims Of A Racist Depiction

A Massachusetts museum dedicated to Dr. Seuss says it will replace a mural featuring a Chinese character from one of his books after three authors said they would boycott an event due to the "jarring racial stereotype."

The mural, located in the author’s hometown of Springfield, features illustrations from the author's first children's book, "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street."

Three children's authors declined an invitation to the museum's inaugural Children's Literature Festival, which was set for Oct. 14 before being canceled. After the museum offered to take down the mural, the authors said they would attend, but the museum has not said if the festival is back on.

Authors Mo Willems, Mike Curato and Lisa Yee signed a letter and posted it to social media explaining why they take issue with the mural's depiction.

"We recently learned that a key component of this institution honoring Dr. Seuss features a mural depicting a scene from his first book, 'And to Think That I Saw It on Mullberry Street,' and within the selected art is a jarring racial stereotype of a Chinese man, who is depicted with chopsticks, a pointed hat and slanted slit eyes, the complaint reads. "We find this caricature of 'the Chinaman' deeply hurtful, and we have concerns about children's exposure to it.

The Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno slammed the authors’ criticism and museum’s decision to remove the mural, asking where do we draw the line?

And I'll just quote from the article... This is political correctness at its worst, and this is what is wrong with our country, and where DO we draw the line” (?)

Sometimes when I try to reply to this kind of thing, I find myself just sitting here shaking my head at how f**ked up everything is getting.

Crazy, @sybdragon was just telling me about this artist the other week! He's not as popular over here as in America, I think. Anywho, after Sybdragon got me to look into him I realized my father had a print of a painting of his in our house - I didn't immediately connect the dots because the painting is by no means "kid friendly".

Its called The Rather Odd Myopic Woman http://www.drseussart.com/secretandarchive/the-rather-odd-myopic-woman

We had been discussing the morality of changing children's books to "update" politically incorrect language, in reference to Pippi Longstocking.

Art history has always been my favorite nook in history because it's a literal window into the past, but, at this rate, only blank faced stick figures will be considered politically correct. Oh ... wait - that's mean to the overweight culture.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Insert your freedoms, liberties and rights into that little poem, save the last line for you, and you get where they are going. Will anyone stand uo before its too LATE.

But you know where i stand on that timeline ive said it before till im tired of saying it.

So sick of these hyper-offended twats.

Do Italians get offended that Super Mario looks like an Italian?
How about Pepe Le Pew being a smelly French stereotype.
Elmer Fudd is a white yokel and also an insult to retards.
Yosemite Sam is an insult to cowboys.
Mr. Spacely is an insult to angry midgets.
