Vegas Shooting: Possible way to shoot without breaking a window

Las Vegas Shooting: How Stephen Paddock Busted Through Vegas Hotel Windows That Don’t Open

Most strip casino room windows do not open

Previously, it was believed that perhaps Paddock shot through his windows before opening fire on the Harvest 91 country music festival, injuring more than 500 people. Another theory was that Paddock fired through a “ventilation strip,” which is a feature some of of these high-rise hotels utilize to allow a little fresh (desert) air in. Those are purposefully not large enough for a body to fit through.

Though the Mandalay Bay has not yet responded to TheWrap‘s request for comment on if the 32nd floor — where Paddock was staying and fired from — had such a feature, this 2008 question and answer from TripAdvisor says the hotel does have ventilation strips:

“Mandalay Bay also has those little ‘ventilation strips’ that you can slide open if it’s the phobia about air circulating…???

:grumph:

Does anyone know anything about these vents. I did an image search and couldn't find a picture of them.

This might explain how they were able to shoot from the lower floors without breaking a window.

Hit Tip to @Carnivalpunk for bringing this article to my attention.

Windows are fixed.  The vents are small and don't do much except bring in the hot ass air from outside

Excellent point.  And then we'd have to ask why would he go to the effort of breaking two windows - which he couldn't do anyway because they are likely made of ballistic security glass and have sensors attached....and if they don't, that's a massive liability for upcoming suits from survivors.

I would drill a little hole with a diamond.

It looks like he just shot it out.

That makes a hell of a lot more sense!  Also, we've learned today that it's likely that these windows come with small ventilation panels - which I've seen in high rises myself with otherwise closed windows.  There's frequently a small panel you can open for fresh air.  Too small for a body, but big enough for a gun.  I have to wonder if this room had those kind of panels.
