Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?

Recommended Posts

"I’ve been researching generational differences for 25 years, starting when I was a 22-year-old doctoral student in psychology. Typically, the characteristics that come to define a generation appear gradually, and along a continuum. Beliefs and behaviors that were already rising simply continue to do so. Millennials, for instance, are a highly individualistic generation, but individualism had been increasing since the Baby Boomers turned on, tuned in, and dropped out. I had grown accustomed to line graphs of trends that looked like modest hills and valleys."

"The allure of independence, so powerful to previous generations, holds less sway over today’s teens."

So sad.

Yes and no.  It's a tool that is abused.

I love having information at my fingertips, but it must be controlled like any other interaction.

A time and place.

Sadly this is not just a secular problem, but it should be.

Another article about the same topic. It contains some remarks about the epidemic consumption of porn among the males of the iGen generation.

A male reader writes (and I post with his permission):

I was reading your article on social isolation among high schoolers (and to a somewhat lesser but significant extent, Millennials) in relation to use of smartphones this morning. I wanted to send you an observation of my own in that area, which reminded me of something else (re: porn use) that fits in pretty well with what you’ve talked about before.

I'd like to see these kids today live more than a day or two in the field, catching their own fish, meat etc. Making their own shelter, camp fire... you get the idea.  When it gets cold in the camp and the rain and wind get really bad nobody cares about you questioning your gender.
