Ukraine's President Poroshenko to send ex-PM Tymoshenko back to prison for plans to impeach him?

Recommended Posts

There has been an unexpected twist to the growing scandal that broke in the Ukrainian Parliament after former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko initiated campaign to impeach president Poroshenko. MPs from the ruling party Petro Poroshenko Block demanded that Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko launch a new investigation into the signing of gas contracts with Russia by Mrs Tymoshenko in 2009. The lawmakers believe criminal charges must be brought against her as soon as possible, lest former Prime Minister leaves the country.

It is obvious that the aggressive response could not have been made behind president Poroshenko's back. This is his way of showing that he will go to any lengths to protect his position on the Ukrainian political stage, even if he has to lock up again the heroine of two previous revolutions and concurrently his main rival in forthcoming presidential election to be held on March 31, 2019.

Looking back, on October 11, 2011 the court found Yulia Tymoshenko guilty of abuse of office and inflicting huge financial losses on the national budget in the gas deal with Russia and sentenced her to seven years in jail. Following the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, Mrs Tymoshenko was released from prison after the article, under which she had been convicted, was decriminalized.
