US spy satellites have detected new activity at North Korea's underground nuclear test site for the first time in several weeks, two US officials told CNN.

The activity appears to involve some modifications around one of the tunnel entrances to an underground test area.

The officials said it is not yet clear if the activity indicates a sixth nuclear test is imminent, but noted there is concern that North Korea could set off a test during Wednesday's visit to Washington by top Chinese diplomats and military officials.

Construction Activity at Launch Pad

Approximately 50 meters southeast of the launch pad, an open area (approximately 5,000 sq. meters) was excavated throughout 2014-2015. This activity ceased in mid-2015 and unexpectedly resumed in March 2017, continuing intermittently since then. The latest imagery shows excavations for a building’s footings and support columns, suggesting a structure of approximately 920 sq. meters.

It is too early to determine if the suspended excavation activity in 2015 was related to this new structure’s originally intended construction, or if this is an entirely new development. While the planned purpose of the new structure is unknown, its proximity to the launch pad suggests it is related to launch operations support.

US And China Officials Meet Under North Korea Cloud

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES:  Top US officials began talks with their Chinese counterparts Wednesday seeking a tougher line on North Korea's nuclear ambitions -- after President Donald Trump implied that Beijing had already tried and failed.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis sat down with top Beijing diplomat State Councilor Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui, chief of Chinese army staff, at the State Department.

US officials said the first and main item on the agenda would be persuading China to lean on Kim Jong-Un's regime in Pyongyang to halt its provocative missile and nuclear plans.

But, just hours before the talks began, Trump sent a tweet implying that China's President Xi Jinping had come up short.

"While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out. At least I know China tried!" Trump tweeted.
