Tensions are on the rise again between North and South Korea, as the two nations have begun exchanging rocket and artillery fire across their border, according to the South Korean Defense Ministry.

Officials say this the first armed clash between the two countries in five years.

North Korea appears to have launched the first attack by firing a shell across the border. South Korean media reported it was likely that the North was aiming at a propaganda-blaring loudspeaker situated in a border town.

South Korea evacuation after shelling on western border.

 

South Korea has ordered the evacuation of residents from an area of its western border after an exchange of fire with North Korea, reports say.

North Korea fired a shell at a South Korean military unit on Thursday, prompting the south to retaliate with several artillery rounds, the South's defence ministry said.

The South then fired "dozens of rounds of 155mm shells" towards where they thought the rocket was launched from, the ministry added in a statement.

S. Korea shells North after rocket attack.

South Korea on Thursday fired dozens of shells into North Korea after detecting a rocket fired across the heavily-militarised border, pushing already elevated cross-border tensions to dangerously high levels. A defence ministry spokesman said South Korea had detected a rocket fired from the North Korean side across a western section of the border shortly before 4:00pm (0700 GMT).

"It landed on our side, but struck no military target," the spokesman told AFP, adding there were no apparent casualties or damage.

South Korean military units retaliated by launching "dozens of rounds of 155mm shells" targeting the rocket launch site, the ministry said in a statement."We have strengthened our military readiness and are closely watching movements of the North's military," it added.

Koreas trade fire near western border

 

In the letter sent from the General Staff of the North Korean People’s Army to South Korea’s Defense Ministry through a border telephone channel at around 4:50 p.m., Pyongyang warned that it would initiate “military action” unless Seoul stops the propaganda broadcasts within 48 hours from 5 p.m.

In a separate letter by Kim Yang-gon, director of the United Front Department in charge of cross-border affairs, to National Security Office chief Kim Kwan-jin, Pyongyang said the broadcasts constitute a “declaration of war” but it is willing to resolve the current situation and “open a way out for the improvement of the relationship.”

Seoul said it has no plan to dismantle the speakers at this point.

Not to say that  Um  is mentally unbalanced. But the absolute worst time to restart the Korean War would be during active exercises  while the US is participating .
