Tokyo has launched an investigation into why it took nearly an hour to report a fatal collision between a US Navy destroyer and a Philippines container ship. Seven US sailors were killed in the crash off the coast of Japan.

Japanese Coast Guard official Tetsuya Tanaka said Monday that the military branch is trying to determine what the crew of the Philippines-flagged ACX Crystal was doing between the time of the collision with the USS Fitzgerald and the moment the accident was reported almost an hour later, AP reported.

COBO has touched on it in pretty well.  There is no way a United states Navy vessel would have this level of a collision unless all systems were offline or no one was manning.

I agree

that cargo ship should have been on Fitzs scope at 150 miles and tracked

i do however believe it's a message sent

big money playing here

Hey! At this point, none of us knows what really happened. But I have read that time zone discrepancies have been noted between JST and GMT.

But I've got to give @Moosupian a big shout-out (despite his appearing to be a mud-duck). He's got waaay more insight to the rules of the road at sea than I do.

If you haven't seen ESET's posts in the original thread, go back to page 6 & 7. Some of Japan's mega-cargo companies got slammed by multiple countries in a mega-scam. Connected? Who knows? But it's well worth noting.

Moosupian reminded us of the collision between the USS Porter and a cargo ship in the Straits of Hormuz a few years back. Run a search and the .mp3 audio of the argument between the CO and the OOD is easily d/l'd. In-fvcking-credible!!! The CO won the argument, and the rest of the story goes downhill in a hurry from there.
