Libya: Hundreds flood Ghat's streets to celebrate Gaddafi's son release from prison

Recommended Posts

Hundreds of people flooded the streets of Ghat, on Saturday night, to celebrate the release of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, a son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, after spending five years in prison.

Footage shows numerous honking cars driving through Ghat's streets, with people hanging out of the vehicles, cheering. Other Gaddafi supporters were seen waving the green flags of the 'Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya', the state declared by the former Libyan leader.

British-educated Saif al-Islam is a prominent member of Gaddafi's remaining family.

After his father's killing, he attempted to flee to Niger but was captured by a rebel group in November 2011. Despite his release, he is still on the wanted list by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. His current location is unknown.
