NASA officials renamed the agency's upcoming sun-studying mission in honour of astrophysicist Eugene Parker, at a press conference at the University of Chicago, Wednesday.

NASA's Thomas Zurbuchen announced, "It is my great honour, a few days before your 90th birthday, Gene, to announce that we are renaming the Solar Probe Plus spacecraft to be known from now on as the Parker Solar Probe. Congratulations."

Commenting of the mission, project scientist Nicola Fox said that it will be "the coolest, hottest mission under the sun" and that NASA hopes the mission will answer question such as "Why is the corona hotter than the surface of the sun?"

The mission is scheduled for summer 2018.
