The sky over Mars may soon be shrouded by clouds: a scientist from the Russian city of Arkhangelsk has just patented a novel invention for creating an atmosphere on Mars. According to the researcher, it will help to control the weather on the Red Planet making colonization possible.

Aleksandr Popov, a member of the International Academy of Science, already has eight patents, and all of them are associated with the exploration of Mars. His latest invention is called "Method of heating up the Mars' atmosphere."

The inventor has proposed using Mars' polar caps, which are composed of solid carbon dioxide and ice. According to Popov, about once every two years, these polar caps begin to "melt" — changing into a gaseous state. Meanwhile, the ice remains on the surface. "With the help of a concentrated solar power system, it can be converted into steam, which is further transformed into a mist or clouds," he told the Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

An Interesting piece of news for you! I feel such a pull to mars...

I guess that will be dealt with next :geek:

Rendition ALL the worlds politicians to mars, while they stand around telling each other how great they are and bitching about the accommodations, all their hot air can be vented out for that "green house effect" their all so fond of talking about. They can build their own planet.

Stupid idea, an even stupider "scientist". The Russian "inventor", is trying to patent an idea, not a working machine. Not only that, it is stupid because it relies upon only resources from Mar's. There is not enough water on Mar's, as is, so any plan relying upon water on Mar's, is doomed to failure.

A water-iron(hopefully gold and other useful minerals) Asteroid, should be brought into Mar's orbit, cut up into large chunks and dropped into Mar's all at once. Then, after that is done, water-carbon asteroids can be brought into the orbit of Mar's, cut into tiny pieces, and dumped into the ever increasing thickness of Mars atmosphere, to mostly add water to the atmosphere(mainly Oxygen). Nitrogen asteroids/meteorites, can also be added to the equation.

Messing with the existing carbon and water on Mar's, is a fools errand and will only result in disaster.

Slight problem...Mars has very little magnetic shielding...atmosphere goes bye-bye.

They better figure out how to grow taters out there cause vodka would be too much trouble to haul.

Recent studies suggest the magnetosphere is generated by the atmosphere(it is believed Mar's supported Earth like life on it's surface, until two extremely large, skyscraper like nukes, blasted most of the atmosphere into space). There is some theories that Mt.Olympus, disrupts and shorts out the magnetosphere, so, Mt. Olympus would have to be demolished.

Also, plowing iron, gold and other metal asteroids into Mar's, would help to boost their little magnetosphere. For this to work, Mar's would have to be 70%+ water on the surface.

Got a link to any of these studies? Curiosity is peeking.

Did you mix something up? The magnetosphere is part of the atmosphere. Did you mean that the magnetic field is generated by the atmosphere?
