The Aaron Swartz FBI Files Have Been Obtained

The website Firedoglake has obtained 21 out of the 23 pages in the Aaron Swartz FBI file. The two pages that were withheld according to the FBI, due to privacy (U.S.C Section 552 (b)(7)(C)), sources and methods (U.S.C Section 552 (b)(7)(E)) putting someone’s life in danger (U.S.C Section 552 (b)(7)(F)). heh.

The records show that the FBI was investigating Aaron Swartz for his role in accessing the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) database managed by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.. Swartz was fully aware of this investigation and had actually sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to acquire his own FBI file.

Firedoglake also points out a 4/16/2009 meeting that was apparently with Swartz’s lawyer, Andrew Good, who refused to talk to the FBI unless an assurance was given that his client, Aaron Swartz, would not be hurt. No assurance was ever given by the FBI, so no further conversation took place.
