The Syrian airfield targeted by United States airstrikes early Friday was “almost completely destroyed,” a human rights group in the country said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the missile attack damaged over a dozen hangars, a fuel depot and an air defense base. About 60 U.S. Tomahawk missiles hit the Shayrat air base, southeast of Homs, a small installation with two runways.

At least four Syrian soldiers were killed in the airstrike, the group said. The governor of Homs province said he did not believe the strikes caused a large number of “human casualties.” A Syrian official the attack caused deaths and a fire, but did not elaborate.

But why so many? 60 Tomahawks costs a lot.

Is it because of the S-300 that was there that they had to use up 60?

No.  It's because they needed to make room for fresh incoming taxpayer-funded cruise missile inventory from Raytheon.  Factories gotsta ship product.

Or did they just decide not to use the S-300 for this:

"Russian Defence Ministry spokesman says Russian air defence forces based in Syria are ready to shoot down US aircraft and missiles attacking the Syrian military if they believe the lives of Russian personnel are threatened."

Russia’s Rossiya 24 news channel has revealed the first footage from the Shayrat airbase, which the United States hit with a volley of 59 Tomahawk missiles after an alleged “chemical attack” in Idlib earlier this week.

Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said "the combat efficiency of the US strike was very low", adding that only 23 of the 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles reached the Shayrat air base in the province of Homs and as the following images suggest, they were not as damaging as some may have hoped...

The USA might have been using this as a test to see how well the S-300 workd against our missiles and we probably had some proto type missiles to try out against it.
