Suspicious Package Found in Sarasota Florida

Probably someones lunch box!


Sarasota police are investigating a suspicious package found around 8 a.m. on the sidewalk near Arlington Street and U.S. 41, near Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The area is blocked off and drivers are asked to please avoid the area.

Two robots have approached the suspicious package; police are unsure what is in the package and are taking precautions before handling the package. Hospital staff is moving patients from the wing closest to the suspicious device to another area of the hospital and are making sure all patients are accounted for. Sarasota police officers have closed a nearby hospital parking garage.

Waldereme and U.S. 41 south to Hillview and U.S. 41 is closed. Traffic is being diverted. Sarasota police say all restaurants and businesses in this stretch of road have been evacuated and Sarasota Memorial Hospital is not accepting new patients at this time. The south SMH Parking Garage on Hillview is closed, police say no one is allowed in or out.

The Sarasota Police Department Explosive Materials Unit is on scene investigating the device and the Sarasota Police Criminal Investigation Division is also working to gather information about where the device came from and the contents of the device.

A Sarasota Memorial Hospital security officer found the suspicious package while on routine patrol. The officer then called 911. Sarasota Police, Sarasota County Fire and EMS are investigating. Stay with WFLA.com for updates.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital was closed and nearby businesses and restaurants were evacuated Wednesday morning after a suspicious package was found on a nearby sidewalk.

The package was found near Arlington Street and U.S. 41 and reported to police around 8 a.m. Around 10:30 a.m., robots used by the Sarasota Police Department's Explosvie Materials Unit determined the package was not a threat.

After the package was reported around 8 a.m., police closed U.S. 41 south to Hillview Street, diverted traffic away from the area and evacuated the businesses.

No one was allowed in or out of Sarasota Memorial Hospital or its south parking garage, and some patients were moved to safer locations within the hospital.

Besides the Sarasota Police Explosive Materials Unit, Sarasota County Fire & EMS worked the scene.
