RINGLING BROS. CIRCUS TO CLOSE AFTER 146 YEARS

Recommended Posts

ELLENTON, Fla. --

After 146 years, the curtain is coming down on "The Greatest Show on Earth." The owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus told The Associated Press that the show will close forever in May.

The iconic American spectacle was felled by a variety of factors, company executives say. Declining attendance combined with high operating costs, along with changing public tastes and prolonged battles with animal rights groups all contributed to its demise.

"There isn't any one thing," said Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. "This has been a very difficult decision for me and for the entire family."

The company broke the news to circus employees Saturday night after shows in Orlando and Miami.

I'm not a fan of wild animals being kept in captivity and put on stage, too many risks for people and animals and that's been proven. Plus the animal cruelty aspect of it is huge. Even so, this circus has been an American icon for almost 150 years and soon, it'll be gone.

This makes me sooooo sad.

Some of the fondest memories of my childhood was my daddy loading all of us kids up in the car and going to the Circus. I feel sorry for the kids today who will never experience the sights, sounds, smells and heart stopping entertainment that Barnum and Bailey provided to so many generations of kids.

I guess the animal activists and fear of clowns put the final nail in the Circus coffin.

When my generation was unhappy at home, we to threatened to run off and join the circus. Where will kids run to now that the circus is gone?

Im sure some of you know, that Masons passed info across lines through the Circus.

I heard this too.  Wondering if they are passing the final message, that the "Greatest show on Earth" is coming to an end?

This is about carnival life & not circus life but they are almost the same idea....
