Between 800 and 1,000 refugees and migrants scaled the razor wire-topped border fence in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta, Saturday, with one man staying atop the fence until dawn on Sunday.

A crane was deployed by the security forces on hand to help many of those stuck on top. They were then escorted back into Morocco.

At least five Spanish officers have been injured as a result, Ceuta officials said. Two of the refugees have been allowed into the enclave for medical treatment.

The Moroccan Interior Ministry said the number of migrants who tried to enter Ceuta totaled 800 and that all of them have been arrested, Reuters reports. The ministry added that 50 of its security forces have been injured in the clashes. Ten are in critical condition, while one has lost his eye.

More of this in Spain.

Madrid (AFP) - More than 1,000 migrants tried to jump a high double fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Sunday in a violent assault that saw one officer lose an eye, local authorities said.

A group of 1,100 people from sub-Saharan Africa trying to reach Europe stormed the border fence just after 4 am (0300 GMT) on New Year's Day in an "extremely violent and organised" way, said the central government's representative office in Ceuta.
