A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the Japanese island of Honshu, according to USGS data. TEPCO said the quake did not affect the integrity of its crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, located relatively close to its epicenter.

The quake struck around 9:43pm GMT on Friday, some 65 km east-northeast of the city of Sendai. The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the quake at the lower magnitude of 5.8.

Japan is going to have a bad time one day. They have way too many brushes with death by nature.

an earthquake this size, right at the damaged Fukushima plant would almost certainly define that "bad time".  This one missed by about  85km.  I'd imagine they felt it at Fukushima....just a reminder.   I have half way been expecting the whole of Japan to go sliding off into the Japan Trench one of these days, and tbh that might be the only way to seal up the leaking radioactivity from that mess.  For a few lifetimes at least.  That MOX fuel has plutonium in it with a half life of some 24,000 years...only say....oh....4X the time span of recorded human history.  Even if it did all get buried in the Japan Trench you couldn't bet natural geological processes would leave it buried that long.  And even if it did it would still be deadly...only half as deadly but deadly.  Not a problem we seem to have any solutions for.

Unless that research about "time-like loops" I've been reading about has some merit ....   :)  Maybe, just maybe there IS a way to isolate that stuff from our environment  long enough to let it burn out :)
