World temperatures for January to April this year have been the hottest on record – sparking fears that global warming is stepping up a gear.

The first four months were the warmest such period across the world’s land and ocean surfaces since records began 136 years ago.

Temperatures for this period reached 0.80 degrees Celsius above the 20th century average, surpassing the previous record of 0.07°C in 2010.

Highs have been recorded in countries as far apart as Ghana, Venezuela and Palau in the Pacific.

The data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also shows that the last 12 months have been hotter than the previous two years.
