wow! BREAKING: Panama Papers: German paper publishes ‘biggest leak in history’ on corruption posting 11.5 million documents from a Panamania

23 posts in this topic

Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) has released the biggest leak in journalistic history, posting 11.5 million documents from a Panamanian law firm online and providing “rare insights into a world that can only exist in the shadows.”

SZ said it received the law firm’s documents a year ago from an anonymous source who “wanted neither financial compensation nor anything else in return.”

The German paper obtained further documents in an investigation that followed, involving “400 journalists from more than 100 media organizations in over 80 countries.”

SZ said it decided to analyze the data in cooperation with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

BUT WHAT THE HELL ARE THESE PAPERS? WHATS IN THEM?

The data in the so-called Panama Papers, “provides rare insights into a world that can only exist in the shadows. It proves how a global industry led by major banks, legal firms, and asset management companies secretly manages the estates of the world’s rich and famous: from politicians, FIFA officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, to celebrities and professional athletes,” the German newspaper wrote.

The Panama Papers

A giant leak of more than 11.5 million financial and legal records exposes a system that enables crime, corruption and wrongdoing, hidden by secretive offshore companies landed in the lap of Süddeutsche Zeitung - and they decided to share with loads of other news media.

Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca’s files include the offshore holdings of drug dealers, Mafia members, corrupt politicians and tax evaders – and wrongdoing galore.

"Include 11.5 million records, dating back nearly 40 years – making it the largest leak in offshore history. Contains details on more than 214,000 offshore entities connected to people in more than 200 countries and territories. Company owners in billionaires, sports stars, drug smugglers and fraudsters."

Our corrupt "leader" with his grade seven education was also well advised to launder 'n few billion there through his trusted family member.. I've said it before (a few times) and I'll say it again -  politics is a very dirty business.  I think there is more moral guidelines / honer and honesty in the Mafia than in politics.

Tax authorities in Australia and New Zealand are probing local clients of a Panama-based law firm at the center of a massive data leak for possible tax evasion.

Other jurisdictions are likely to follow suit following the leak over the weekend of details of hundreds of thousands of clients in more than 11.5 million documents from the files of law firm Mossack Fonseca, based in the tax haven of Panama.

The documents are at the center of an investigation published on Sunday by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and more than 100 other news organizations around the globe.

The German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung said it received the huge cache of documents and shared them with the other media outlets.

The leaked "Panama Papers" cover a period over almost 40 years, from 1977 until last December, and allegedly show that some companies domiciled in tax havens were being used for suspected money laundering, arms and drug deals and tax evasion.

"I think the leak will prove to be probably the biggest blow the offshore world has ever taken because of the extent of the documents," said Gerard Ryle, director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

Britain's Guardian newspaper said the documents showed a network of secret offshore deals and loans worth $2 billion led to close friends of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reuters could not independently confirm those details.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters on Monday.

Last week, Peskov said reports about the financial dealings of concert cellist Sergei Roldugin, a friend of Putin, and other related reports, were part of a politically motivated campaign to discredit Putin ahead of a cycle of elections.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) said it was investigating more than 800 wealthy clients of Mossack Fonseca. <more at the link>

Notice the lack of any US politicians or any members of a certain tribe? This is a hit job by TPTB.

What are the Panama Papers? A Guide to the Biggest Data Leak in History

WHAT ARE THE PANAMA PAPERS?

A GUIDE TO THE BIGGEST DATA LEAK IN HISTORY

No matter where you are in the world, there are three words you are absolutely certain to hear over, and over, and over again in the coming days, weeks, and months, and those words are: The Panama Papers. What do we know about them? The video below gives a basic breakdown, but to sum up the Panama Papers from a very high level, they are documents (in this case 2.6 terabytes of data worth) which are processed or held by Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian law firm that sells anonymous offshore companies around the world. The shell firms they sell enable their owners to cover up their business dealings, regardless of how shady the business dealings may be.

One can only surmise how long it will take to sort through that much data, but even at this early stage, a few things are worth noting. First, not all people who use offshore shell companies are crooks, bad people, or doing anything illegal. Second, many people using offshore shell companies ARE crooks, bad people, and ARE doing something illegal. It’s a world that exists through middle men who work and transact business in the shadows, and among those already documented are members of the world’s rich and famous: from politicians, Fifa officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, to celebrities and professional athletes. Also, the following 12 heads of state have been named:
