Monopoly Game Goes Cashless

5 posts in this topic

We had to know this was coming. No more bankers or cash in a Monopoly game...just swipe your card!

New Monopoly game goes cashless — complete with credit cards and a digital banking unit

You won’t have to collect $200 in cash anymore.

The Monopoly Ultimate Banking edition that debuted at New York Toy Fair this week scraps the treasured paper money for debit cards — and bumps the banker for an ATM.

A new digital banking unit tallies the costs of properties, utilities, plastic houses and hotels by scanning barcodes on the property cards. Then players wave their debit cards to complete transactions, rather than counting their cash and waiting for the banker to do the same.

“We looked closely at the ways that people pay today. One way is tapping your credit card at checkout. So we incorporated that idea into this new game,” Hasbro’s Jonathan Berkowitz tells the Daily News.

Hasbro’s 81-year-old real estate game based on developing the streets in Atlantic City has dabbled with a cashless economy before, but players still had to manually enter dollar amounts before swiping their plastic.

The new, improved Ultimate Banking edition does all the arithmetic for the players. The most high-tech edition of the beloved board game yet has even made the Chance cards digital. Players flick the orange cards, which can grant rewards (bank error in your favor!) or pile on added expenses (time to make general repairs on all your property) over the banking unit to adjust their funds as needed.

If you like your arithmetic you can keep your arithmetic.....but the bank/gov decides how much money you should have.

Isn't it sad? Monopoly has always been one of my family's favorite games. Now the game has been co-opted and will be used as a tool to promote a cashless society. I wonder if they have changed the rules to where the winner has to distribute their wealth among all the players so everyone will be equal?

Don't worry, if the dollar keep buying less and less, pretty soon we can use the real thing when we play.
