LIVE Mitt Romney Speech on 'state of the 2016 presidential race' (3-3-16)

Mitt Romney launched a broadside against Donald Trump’s surging campaign on Thursday, calling the man who wishes to succeed him as the GOP’s presidential nominee a “phony” and a “fraud” who is playing Americans for “suckers.”

The 2016 front-runner already is firing back, calling Romney a "failed candidate" who begged him for his endorsement when he ran four years ago. Trump indeed endorsed Romney in the 2012 race.

Romney delivered his scathing speech at the University of Utah. As one businessman to another, Romney even mocked Trump’s record of building companies.

“A business genius he is not,” he said.

More broadly, the party’s 2012 presidential nominee issued a stark warning that Trump’s policies would lead to recession and “make America and the world less safe.” He said the “only serious policy proposals” for the country are coming from the other Republican candidates on the field.

“I understand the anger Americans feel today,” Romney said, but added: “Here's what I know. Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He's playing ... the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat.”

Romney also claims Trump, if nominated, would enable Hillary Clinton to be elected president.

The speech comes ahead of the Fox News Republican primary debate Thursday night at 9 p.m. ET in Detroit, the candidates' first showdown since Super Tuesday.

Trump swiftly responded to the ex-GOP nominee, taking to Twitter to claim he’s the “only one who can beat Hillary Clinton” and recalling Romney’s record in the presidential elections so far.

“I am not a Mitt Romney, who doesn't know how to win,” Trump tweeted.

He added: “Failed candidate Mitt Romney, who ran one of the worst races in presidential history,is working with the establishment to bury a big ‘R’ win!”

And speaking on MSNBC, Trump once again would not rule out mounting an independent bid.

The address Thursday amounts to an astonishing full-court press by Romney to stop Trump from winning the party’s nomination. Until now, Romney has mostly criticized Trump via Twitter and media interviews, but this is his most robust effort yet to rally the party and primary voters against the GOP front-runner.

These jackasses have been in politics for YEARS AND YEARS! They have no more cred, because the state of the country is a result of their graft and corruption. How can they even say anything, unless they think their listeners are totally brainwashed.

lol Romney is worried about export jobs, what a DICK!  He's not the least bit worried about exporting jobs out of the country. I could go on and on. Romneycare was the testing grounds for Obammycare.

The GOP wants to split the party down the middle and get Hillary elected, it seems. EDIT: SELECTED, NOT ELECTED.

I don't know about Trump either, but it seems to me that someone has a lot to lose if he gets into office and they are not liking that idea one little bit.

Exactly! Both sides are coming together to trash Trump! Problem is that Trump has his own money and can say what he wants. Which is apparently what the general public wants to hear according to the polls. My take on this is if Trump gets in then he stands to profit immensely through deals that he'll make with China and Russia possibly avoiding ww3. War is good for neo con business. Not Trump. I see him developing country clubs and golf courses for the wealthy in both countries. Hell probably casinos! Same thing he does everywhere he goes. Although there's really no way to know what he'll do once in. The fact remains that he has in fact awaken a large segment of the country that is tired of the same old song and dance. Whether he sticks to what he says or not the awakening has happened and the people want change.
