Wal-Mart said Friday it will close 269 stores across the globe, including 154 in the U.S. The world's largest retailer also will open as many as 405 stores globally in the coming fiscal year, as it shifts its focus toward Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets in profitable locations.

In all, 16,000 employees will be impacted by the store closings, about 10,000 of whom are in the U.S.

What's Wal-Mart's stock doing now? Click here.

The domestic store closures will mostly impact the company's Walmart Express stores, which account for 102 of the closings. These small stores, which are comparable in size to a dollar store, had been in pilot since 2011. They were rebranded as Neighborhood Market in 2014.

Also domestically, Wal-Mart will also close 23 Neighborhood Market stores, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam's Clubs.

Our local one (Makro) is building a new store in the middle of nowhere between two suburbs - why?

Sounds like a large chunk of the nation's food supply will soon be controlled by Walmart. This is seriously serious.  No one can compete with Walmart prices. They already put almost everyone out of business but the grocery stores and now they're going after that market. It's a good business plan and it will work. Not having as many choices is nothing compared to one mega corporation having this much control over the food supply chain.  If it works they'll keep expanding this kind of thing.

RNN) - Walmart announced Friday it is closing 154 U.S. stores, according to a company press release, including the company’s 102 Walmart Express stores, the smallest format stores.

It is part of a global downsizing that will shutter 269 stores around the world out of Walmart's nearly 11,600 stores.

The smaller-format store format had been tested since 2011.

In addition to all the Express stores, 23 Neighborhood Markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam’s Clubs will be closed.

Thanks for moving, didn't see it somehow. So what crazy conspiracies you think are going to come out of this one?

IMO its the economy, but not with the Wally Worlds shutting down before/during J.H.

I'd be watching the owners and seeing what they are doing. They do have that massive bunker complex remember.

The Chinese, or the Clintons?

Has anyone reported on the 5 previously closed Walmarts from last year?

Notice anything different?

Are these 5 still under scrutiny for something that might be coming up?

The bunkers were said to be in the Mountains, because I doubt Walmarts are fortified enough for that, but they could still have underground tunnels, although that should be more obvious if there were.

JH16 was going to start in March I think.

I suspect this move has something to do with the economy in China. Sounds like Walmart is liquidating assets and propositioning for a financial earthquake.

  1. Walmart helped destroy America’s manufacturing sector to begin with.

A 2007 study by the Economic Policy Institute found that Walmart’s imports to the US from China alone led to the elimination of nearly 200,000 US jobs, primarily in the manufacturing sector.  Duke Professor Gary Gereffi has described Walmart and China as “a joint venture. And both are determined to dominate the U.S. economy as much as they can.”[2]

As the world’s largest retailer, Walmart puts enormous pressure on suppliers to cut costs.  This has often meant moving to China.  As Demos reported, “companies that used to manufacture products in the United States, from Levi’s jeans to Master Lock, were pressured to shut their U.S. factories and moved manufacturing abroad to meet Walmart’s demand for low prices.”  In turn, Walmart’s business model accelerated the use of offshore suppliers by its competitors, contributing to a greater loss of American manufacturing jobs

You mean how walton previously served in the military or high government positions and then that may have ties with the walmart functions?

Military can reuse it to fit their needs.
