Something Blew Up In North Korea - A Hydrogen Bomb!

45 posts in this topic

Update - I was suspect of the earthquake when I began this thread. North Korea has now announced that the "quake" was actually Hydrogen Bomb test!

As most of you know, I'm our resident earthquake watcher. I was having a quick look at one of my quake links and noticed something very very strange. A 5.2 earthquake is being reported in North Korea.  Quakes in Korea are very rare as it is not a highly seismic zone. If you look at the data the quake was 2 km deep..very  shallow.  So, I went looking for news of the earthquake and found this on the Korea Times front page...

(Breaking) N. Korea's earthquake suspected to be 'explosion': China's earthquake center

Hold the press....It gets better!

Tremor detected near North Korea nuclear site

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake has been detected in northern North Korea, close to a site previously used for nuclear tests.

Chinese and South Korea officials said there were indications the tremor was man-made, which could mean the North has carried out a nuclear explosion.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said ministers were holding an emergency meeting.

Maybe the announcement is that he strapped Rodman on to one of those nukes and set him off underground LOL...

With media reports about an earthquake in North Korea fueling speculation over a possible nuclear test, some Chinese media reports put the suspected explosion at 22 kilotons, the equivalent of 22,000 tons of TNT.

China is a key ally of North Korea, but Beijing has expressed public displeasure over the North's unruly behavior, particularly since the North's third nuclear test.

The North conducted underground nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

A senior Seoul official said it would seek close cooperation with the U.S. and China over the issue, and that if Pyongyang is confirmed to have conducted a nuclear test, a U.N. Security Council session will open to discuss the issue.

Cheong Wa Dae is set to convene a Security Council Session at noon.

“The artificial earthquake occurred near Punggye-ri, the North’s nuclear site. It has yet to be confirmed whether it was a nuclear test or not,” the official told reporters on the customary condition of anonymity. “We will analyze it to see if it is really a nuclear test. And then we will take due steps.”

<snip>

While Kim Jong Un did not mention his country's nuclear program during his New Year address, there are indications that North Korea may be preparing to test its thermonuclear weapons capabilities.

South Korea's Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) Defense Command reported Sunday that Pyongyang may be building a light water nuclear reactor to produce tritium, a radioactive isotope necessary to build more sophisticated nuclear weapons.

The U.S. research institute 38 North, which studies high-resolution commercial satellite imagery of the region, said last week North Korea is excavating a new tunnel. The site of the new tunnel is at Punggye-ri where Pyongyang conducted its three nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

<snip>

Last month Kim Jong Un also claimed his country now possesses a hydrogen bomb, which is more powerful than the atomic bombs tested in the past. The U.S. discounted Kim's hydrogen bomb claim as unsubstantiated, but cautioned that North Korea's nuclear ambitions pose a very serious risk to global peace and security.
