Strong quake hits Greek island of Lefkada, 2 dead

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of at least 6.1 hit the western Greek island of Lefkada on Tuesday, killing two people and causing extensive damage to infrastructure and buildings on Lefkada and nearby islands.

The temblor was felt across western Greece, which is very earthquake-prone, with people on Lefkada and the nearby Ionian Sea island of Kefalonia rushing out onto the streets.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the undersea quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 and occurred at 9:10 a.m. (0710 GMT) off Greece’s western mainland, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) west of Athens. The U.S. Geological Survey put the preliminary magnitude at 6.5. Different agencies often have varying preliminary magnitudes in the hours and sometimes days after a quake.

Greek authorities were struggling to assess the damage, their efforts hampered by landslides that blocked Lefkada’s network of narrow, mountainous roads.

Quake watch for incoming CME.

The double filament eruption of late November 15 produced a double CME
towards the South West. As reported yesterday, the first appearance in
SoHO/LASCO C2 is at 23:24UT. Subsequent coronagraph images now show that
the angular extent of this first CME is rather limited. However, the core
of the CME corresponding to the second filament eruption is visible from
3:12 UT November 16 onwards. It is directed primarily in SouthWest
direction and reaches an angular extent of around 180 degrees. Projected
speeds are higher than that of the first CME and between 600-700 km/s.
Cactus failed to detect the second CME within the earlier detection. A
glancing blow or shock arrival from the second CME can be expected around
noon November 18.
