Power Outage at Air Traffic Control Center Stops Planes

The Federal Aviation Administration is reporting a ground stop for many flights along the East Coast due to a problem at the Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center.

The FAA website is reporting flights to and from Washington National, Washington Dulles International, New York LaGuardia International, New York John F. Kennedy International, Philadelphia International, Newark International, Miami International, and the Teterboro have been marked with delays. The status updates for the airports indicate the delays are at least an hour long with no apparent end.

An automation problem at an air traffic control center in Leesburg, Virginia is causing significant delays for those going in and out of New York City, Baltimore and Washington, and the delays appear to be spreading across the country.

High altitude traffic is being directed around the affected airspace, according to the FAA. Authorities say the issue has nothing to do with an accident or hacking.

BWI Airport released a statement via Twitter saying the outage is limiting flights in and out of BWI, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. Passengers are asked to check with their airline for updated information.

American Airlines released a statement saying the issue was impacting all of its East Coast flights. Delays are being reported at New York’s La Guardia and John F. Kennedy International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and BWI Marshall Airport.

There is no estimated time for restoration.

Good catch on the ground stop.  Quite a few years ago there was a similar situation with the east coast computers going down. I know because I was traveling when it happened. It ended up taking me an additional 24 hours to reach my destination due to all the cancled flights.

Note to anyone trying to fly in or out of the east coast: This would not be a good day to give up drinking!
