Quote

Key West, Florida — Mosquitos can be one helluva a nuisance — and with those pesky little critters comes myriad illnesses, but two in particular have been present in South Florida in recent years — Chikungunya and Dengue Fever. Both are vector-borne diseases, and both are transmitted by Aedes aegypti — the scientific name for a bothersome little bug, also known as the “yellow fever mosquito,” that 99.99% of the population despises. There was an outbreak of dengue in Florida in 2009, but since then it’s been pretty quite. So, does the problem really warrant releasing millions of man-altered, genetically modified mosquitos into the wild, with a cunning war-like plot of wiping the little bugger out (or at least beating the population back to sheer vestiges of what it is now)? That’s exactly what Oxitec, a British biotech company, and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD), want to do with the OX513A Aedes aegypti mosquito — let the GMO genie out of the bottle. The OX513A is a man-altered mosquito that carries a “kill switch gene.” Since it is only the female mosquito that bites and transmits the fevers, Oxitech says all of the GMO mosquitos they plan to release are male. The company’s theory is that the designed genetic mutant males then mate with females in the wild, whereafter their offspring carry the “kill switch,” which, in turn, produces an effect “which causes offspring to die,” according to Oxitec’s website. It claims that 95% of the offspring die before reaching maturity. That 95% percent number in and of itself creates issues for environmental groups because many mosquitos carrying the gene, both male and female, could grow up to maturity and mate — opening up a pandora’s box of unknowns throughout the entire ecosystem. The company’s theory with OX513A is based on a technique that has been around since the 1950s called “Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).” In the old days, they’d just fry a population of male insects with radiation in their best effort to sterilize them without killing them — then, turn them loose in the wild to compete for female insects during the mating period. With SIT, reproduction doesn’t occur through copulation, hence repeated application of males into the wild can lower insect populations. - http://environews.tv/world-news/meet-the-new-gmo-mosquito-millions-carrying-the-kill-switch-gene-may-be-released-in-florida/

Another "But it sounded like a good idea at the time!" Idiots, this can just NOT end well.

If we can wipe out these little pests, then we should go ahead and give this a go.

You won't know unless you try.

Oh, for cryin' out loud. Trust the genetic-modifying that gives us frankenfood and toxins in our groundwater and oceans!

My property is infested with alien plants and animals. The geniuses at the Ag Dept. introduced Asian Lady Beetles years ago to control aphids.  Our native ladybugs are now being extirpated by this obnoxious intruder. American bumblebees and other native bees are dying out from diseases and pests carried into wild habitat by European honeybees. Flowering dogwoods have almost completely disappeared thanks to a fungus from Korean dogwoods. The American Chestnut, once the king of eastern forests,  is a gone pecan now, thanks to a disease brought here from abroad.

There are safe and proven methods to eradicate mosquitoes in human communities. But no, they use aerosol sprays that kill beneficial insects and add to the accumulation of toxins in humans who are exposed to the chemicals.

Rant over. Unless FR tells us that vaccines are good for babies.

Genes mutate now at an unprecedented rate  because of all the chemical and rf wave help we give them. With all the crossovers from insect to human in terms of disease even introducing a kill switch is a time bomb.

What real evidence do you have to back up your paranoid delusions?

It's not a disease!  It's a genetic alteration that affects the ability of mosquitos to reproduce.

Unless you can have sex with and give birth to mosquito babies, it isn't going to affect humans.

You are afraid of everything!  Do you want us to move back into caves and live off of berries and small animals?  Do we have to go back to using leeches for healthcare to make you happy?  What about wiping out the diseases these pests bring are we just to let them run rampant.  Of course you are afraid of vaccines so you have no solution, just a lot of paranoia.

Earlier you called me insane. Now I'm afraid of everything and paranoid to boot. Insults are always a good way to engage in rational debate.

Sorry, clueless person. You'll get no argument from me since I gave specific examples of how the Body Scientific is a reckless fool.  I could also have pasted graphs showing sharp declines in diseases well before any vaccines were invented. That would require opening your mind.

You offer a sweet and childlike trust in science hierarchies. If you like your health care, you can keep your health care. Keep taking those blue pills. Sleep like a baby. It's all good. Avoid stress. Like ct sites, where you are lost as a goose. So why are you here, hmm?

if you read what I wrote I said crossovers in terms of disease. Read the article I know what it says. Do you know for a fact that a mutation could not occur and the kill switch cross the genome into the human species.

Do you know why you were given two ears and only one mouth. So you could listen twice as much as you talk.:chuckle:
