Group takes a shovel to Confederate General’s grave

13 posts in this topic

A group of anti-Confederate protesters aren’t happy enough with the declaration by the city of Memphis that it wants to dig up and move the remains of Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest .

They want it done now .

A group surrounded a shovel Wednesday and ceremoniously removed a chunk of grass and soil .

“We are going to bring the back hoe, the tractors and the men with the equipment to raise Bedford Forrest from the soil of Memphis,” Isaac Richmond with the “Commission on Religion and Racism” declared to awaiting TV cameras, CBS 3 video :  http://wreg.com/2015/07/22/group-takes-a-shovel-to-confederate-generals-grave/

Richmond ran unsuccessfully for Congress last year. : http://www.drisaacrichmond.com/2014/04/16/dr-isaac-richmond-announces-run-for-tennessees-9th-congressional-district/

He believes if the general who died 137 years ago can just be eliminated, that will really help things.

“If he’s gone, some of this racism and race-hate might be gone,” he said, shovel in hand. “We got a fresh shovel full, and we hope that everybody else will follow suit and dig him up.”

Others see their actions as little more than destruction of property.

According to the city council’s attorney, Chancery Court would also have to sign off on the removal of the remains and the family of Forrest would be involved in the decision as well.

The removal of the statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest is a separate issue.

The removal of the statue has been proposed as an ordinance before the council which will have to be read before the council three times before it can be approved.

From there it will be presented to the Tennessee Historic Commission but there is no time line for when they will make a decision.

... and right or wrong, how can you justify the idea to desecrate someone's grave?

Chumps! When will it end? The South lost, many thousands died, the economy was disrupted for decades. Now their last vestiges of pride will be stolen.

Yeah, digging up his grave will promote peace and harmony and suddenly we'll all get along. In white culture it's known as desecration.

Let sleeping dogs lie and all the graves in the Arlington National Cemetery as well.

What idiots, they don't even learn history... They are taking the Norths side..

they are taking the northern side a.k.a. victors story as gospel. While the issue of the Civil War directly might have been slavery. The rebellion truly goes back to the ratification of the Constitution and state right. The Civil War ended any  Real attempts at nullification  of federal law by states .  It gave us our current federal government. How many of you people are really happy with the way the federal government is run today that issue was settled by the Civil War. They hang the misnomer of slavery over the whole issue when it was not the whole i reason or cause for the Civil War .

i'm going to the oral surgeon today. I'm sure I will have to explain this further again. But for anyone to start that is interested looked up the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions of 1798, Co written by Thomas Jefferson .

Isn't desecrating a grave site a criminal act?
How about defacing a monument or public space?
At the least it's vandalism and should be prosecuted.

Those are not yankees who want to dig up that guys grave.  They are southerners.  I want to think that this kind of thing would not happen if people were taught better in school.  Ending racism is one thing.  Moving a grave is not good.  Bedford was not Hitler.

when something passes logic and sanity who can throw reason at it so I just cracked a good ole southern joke

How slavery was implemented and dismantled was all part of a plan. Tptb do not want tolerance and temperance but hatred and intolerance. They can't feed off of fear and  ignorance unless the ship is on fire and sinking. Pride is the fuel that kindles this fire. All is vanity and vexation of the spirit.
