Oregon bakery that refused same-sex couple owes $135,000 in damages

Bureau of Labor and Industries’ ruling comes after Portland-area shop Sweet Cakes by Melissa would not bake wedding cake, but bakers could appeal

The owners of a Portland-area bakery that denied service to a same-sex couple must pay $135,000 in damages, the bureau of labor and industries has ruled.

The damages are for emotional suffering caused by Sweet Cakes by Melissa, which two years ago refused to bake a wedding cake for Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer.

A 2007 Oregon law protects the rights of LGBT people in employment, housing and public accommodations. It provides an exemption for religious organisations, but the agency ruled that exemption does not allow private businesses to discriminate against potential customers.

“This case is not about a wedding cake or a marriage. It is about a business’s refusal to serve someone because of their sexual orientation. Under Oregon law, that is illegal,” Oregon labor commissioner Brad Avakian said in the final order.

In April, an administrative law judge proposed the same damages.

The bakers said their refusal to bake for the couple was prompted by religious beliefs. The case has been cited in the national debate over religious freedom and discrimination against gays.

First place they don't "Owe" them anything. 2nd place is that the fact this had ZERO to do with employment, housing and public accommodations. This had to do with people with a certain sexual world view wanting to use their political power to force a business to contract with whom they decide the business should have to contract with. That's fascism!

Emotional suffering my butt!! Are they both having panic attacks and night terrors now? Poor things...
The lesbians set this up from the start. Portland is super liberal. Heck the mayor Sam Adams was openly gay.
They could have gone anywhere for their gay cake but they chose to target this nice Christian couple.
Their livelihood has been destroyed by this and the gay community is happy about it.
That just shows what kind of people they truly are. Mean hearted selfish nasty jerks!

And they got what amounts to a gag order to boot: When I clicked on the facebook link in the article it didn't work for me.

Happy Independence Day: State of Oregon fines Christian bakers $135,000 over a wedding cake

<snip>

Not only did Avakian levy a $135,000 judgment against the Kleins for “emotional damages” to the couple denied a wedding cake, he slapped a gag order on them that forbids the Kleins from explaining to potential customers of Sweet Cakes why they won’t bake a cake for a same-sex wedding. Of course, since they’re no longer in business, it no longer matters — and even if they were, the $135,000 fine would make sure they weren’t. The Daily Signal poses this as a broader gag order than it is, however:

Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian finalized a preliminary ruling today ordering Aaron and Melissa Klein, the bakers who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding, to pay $135,000 in emotional damages to the couple they denied service.

“This case is not about a wedding cake or a marriage,” Avakian wrote. “It is about a business’s refusal to serve someone because of their sexual orientation. Under Oregon law, that is illegal.”

In the ruling, Avakian placed an effective gag order on the Kleins, ordering them to “cease and desist” from speaking publicly about not wanting to bake cakes for same-sex weddings based on their Christian beliefs.

“This effectively strips us of all our First Amendment rights,” the Kleins, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, which has since closed, wrote on their Facebook page. “According to the state of Oregon we neither have freedom of religion or freedom of speech.”
