Bloggers, Conspiracy Theorists Compared to ISIS During Congressional Hearing

9 posts in this topic

Bloggers, conspiracy theorists and people who challenge establishment narratives on the Internet were all likened to ISIS terrorists during a chilling Congressional hearing which took place yesterday.

The hearing, hosted by the House Foreign Relations Committee, was titled “Confronting Russia’s Weaponization of Information,” and accused Russian state broadcaster RT of weaponizing “conspiracy theories” to spread propaganda.

One of the speakers giving testimony was former RT host Liz Wahl, who made a public spectacle of quitting Russian state media last year in an incident stage-managed by neo-con James Kirchick, himself a former employee of Radio Free Europe – a state media outlet.

Remarking that the Internet provided a platform for “fringe voices and extremists,” Wahl characterized people who challenge establishment narratives as a “cult”.

“They mobilize and they feel they’re part of some enlightened fight against the establishment….they find a platform to voice their deranged views,” said Wahl.

Referring to comments made in January by US Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) chief Andrew Lack, who characterized RT as a threat on the same level as ISIS and Boko Haram, Wahl said the comparison was justified.

“By using the Internet to mobilize people that feel displaced, that feel like they’ve been on the outskirts of society, and give them a place where they can find a sense of belonging, and maybe make a difference in their own way, and it’s a problem,” she said.

Wahl went on to bemoan the fact that conspiracy theorists were “shaping the discussion online, on message boards, on Twitter, on social media,” before asserting that the web had become a beacon of “disinformation, false theories, people that are just trying to make a name for themselves, bloggers or whatever, that have absolutely no accountability for the truth, that are able to rile up a mass amount of people online.”

Committee Chairman Ed Royce then proceeded to accuse people on YouTube of using “raw violence” to advance conspiracy theories.

Peter Pomerantsev, of the London-based Legatum Institute, followed up by claiming that conspiracy theories were no longer “fringe” and were now driving the success of Jean-Marie Le Pen in France, before lamenting the fact that conspiracy theories were challenging the “global order” and threatening to undermine global institutions.

All three individuals that gave testimony are staunch critics of Russia, leading Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) to wish “we had at least one other person to balance out this in a way that perhaps could’ve compared our system to the Russian system, to find out where that truth is, just how bad that is.”

Beyond the inflammatory rhetoric, the real story revolves around the fact that Washington was caught off guard by the rapid growth of RT, with Hillary Clinton and others having acknowledged the fact that the U.S. is “losing the information war,” which is why they are now desperately trying to denigrate the Russian broadcaster.

Without a doubt, RT puts out pro-Russian propaganda, but it also broadcasts truths about geopolitics and U.S. foreign policy that Americans will never see on mainstream corporate networks, precisely because those networks are also engaged in propaganda.

There’s no mystery behind why RT has become so big – telling the truth is popular – but because Washington finds it impossible to compete on that basis, it has been forced to resort to ad hominem attacks and ludicrous comparisons to ISIS in a desperate bid to level the playing field.

As linguist Noam Chomsky said, “The idea that there should be a network reaching people, which does not repeat the US propaganda system, is intolerable” to the US establishment.

It wasn’t that long ago that only conspiracy theorists claimed there were no WMDs in Iraq and the oligarchs of the Western world had a different reason to want to bomb the place back into the dark ages.

It wasn’t that long ago that only conspiracy theorists claimed the crash of 2008 wasn’t the fault of lying potential homeowners but rather it was a concerted effort by bankers colluding with political figures to remake the economic structure of this and many other nations.

It wasn’t that long ago that only conspiracy theorists claimed Big Banking and Big Business owned nearly every single politician in the United States regardless of party affiliation.

It wasn’t that long ago that only conspiracy theorists claimed Obama’s “moderate” rebels in Syria were the ones behind the chemical weapons attack that left so many dead and Obama’s finger on the button due to the “red line” violation they tried to blame on Assad.

And it wasn’t that long ago when only conspiracy theorists wrote that Russia never “invaded” Ukraine and the whole thing was made up in order to justify sanctions against the country for not going along with our regime change agenda.

But today, most informed people know all of those former conspiracy theories are in fact, reality.

They know that thanks to those conspiracy theorists out there who keep plugging along, quietly, dutifully, doing what journalists are supposed to do: question the assumptions and not serve as simply a mouth piece for whatever administration happens to be in office at the time.

You see, that used to be the role of journalism in our constitutional republic. And it was an important role.

It was so important, the profession of journalism is the only one mentioned by name in the constitution of the United States.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

Yesterday in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, there was a hate-fest of sorts during which a number of members of the House of Representatives and their witnesses came together to demonize the efforts of those of us who are not on the corporate payroll and work diligently to shed a little light on the lies and disinformation we are being constantly fed by the main stream media.

However, in their efforts to diminish us, they gave us a certain praise, a compliment the likes of which we conspiracy theorists rarely hear in the halls of congress. And we should take notice of it.

We were equated with “ISIS” at one point, called ‘deranged’ at another by the little RT reporter who, at the behest of a cold-war hungry neocon, staged a walkout live on air over RT’s refusal to promote lies about Russia invading Ukraine.

It was a full 19 minutes before Wahl resigned. Inside the offices of the Foreign Policy Initiative, a neoconservative think tank in Washington D.C., a staffer logged on to the group’s Twitter account to announce the following:

“#WordOnTheStreet says that something big might happen on RT in about 20-25 minutes.”

Then, at 5:16, exactly 10 minutes before Wahl would quit on air, FPI tweeted:

“#WordOnTheStreet says you’re really going to want to tune in to RT: http://rt.com/on-air/rt-america-air/ #SomethinBigMayBeGoingDown”

Up until two minutes before Wahl’s resignation, FPI took to Twitter again to urge its followers to tune in to RT.

And finally, at 5:26 p.m., at the very moment Wahl quit, FPI’s Twitter account broke the news: “RT Anchor RESIGNS ON AIR. She ‘cannot be part of a network that whitewashes the actions of Putin.’ ” TruthDig

Immediately after her staged departure, Liz Wahl was cashing in on the propaganda effort being shuttled around for interviews on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, The View and the Colbert Report.

Wahl’s little piece of war-mongering performance art propaganda was scripted by her friend, a long time neocon war-monger, James Kirchick.

Kirchich and Wahl right after her little “I quit” psyop at RT

Of course, the conspiracy theorists of the world delved a little deeper than CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, The View and the Colbert Report did when they presented their version of events and her connection to neocons like Weekly Standard founder William Kristol, Mitt Romney, Dan Senor and Robert Kagan was exposed.

Wahl was immediately exposed as nothing more than this decade’s Judith Miller, lying about Russia Today and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by extension on behalf of war-mongering neocons just like Judith did before her.

You see, that’s the value of conspiracy theorists.

So whatever vile condemnation Liz has for us, I take it as a badge of honor for conspiracy theorists everywhere. The more she rants, more she confirms the value of our work.

Sitting at the table next to her was a guy by the name of Peter Pomerantsev, a TV producer based in London who specializes in fake reality shows. He wrote a book in which he depicts Putin as a dictator.

Couldn’t possibly find a more reliable “witness” than that, could you Chairman Royce? But of course, only a conspiracy theorist would point that out.

Peter described conspiracy theories as “a linguistic sabotage on the infrastructure of reason”and then presented us conspiracy theorists as a real threat to their “global order”

Aside from Liz’s sour-grapes rant directed at those who outed her as the concubine of a neocon think-tanker, I can’t think of a nicer compliment coming from this hearing.

Yes, journalism has ALWAYS been INTENDED to serve as a linguistic sabotage on the infrastructure of prescribed official “reason”

It’s supposed to make you think. Make you challenge the assumptions. Make you consider for a MINUTE that things don’t just happen by chance, that there is indeed a guiding hand behind much of the events of foreign policy and that many times that guiding hand isn’t doing it for YOUR BENEFIT.

That is a necessary element of what is called DEMOCRACY. People who hold officials and their “official versions” of events in the news accountable when those “official versions” turn out to be hogwash.

If you don’t have that, you have a totalitarian state and I don’t care if it’s run by a state owned institution or one owned by Rupert Murdoch or Bill Gates which only looks out for the interest of the oligarchs of the country.

Yes, bloggers and conspiracy theorists are doing the work the complicit corporate media won’t do: journalism. Real journalism.
And they hate us for it.

They hate us not just because we expose folks like Liz Wahl and the propagandist little stunts they pull for their own benefit but also for the very reason Mr. Pomerantsev so melodramatically explains while waving his hands around at the end of the video below:

“Our global order is based on reality based politics. If that reality base is destroyed then you can’t have international institutions and international dialog… this is a very insidious trend” Peter Pomerantsev

Their global order, or at least the new world order they are trying to establish, is based entirely on their ability to dictate what reality is. They have to establish that reality base in order for them to build upon it an alternative reality conducive to their goals. If they can’t do that, if actual reality continues to seep into the community conscientiousness becoming part of the debate, then all is lost because they simply don’t have the facts to support the lies they have been feeding us for so damn long. And people are starting to understand it.

THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is the insidious trend Mr. Pomerantsev is speaking about. And to that I say to Mr. Pomerantsev:

“You’re Goddamned right we are. Because that’s the way the founders of this nation intended it”

I have to look at this as yes, a rather disturbing threat to our constitutional freedoms, but also as one of the most endearing compliments ever paid to us conspiracy theorists in the House of Representatives, albeit unintentional.

We are the greatest threat to their new world order and don’t you guys ever forget it.

To hell with that witch! Want to bet she blogs and tweets so doesn't that make her what she labels other bloggers? The witch is nothing more than a spoiled brat who was not going to make a multimillion dollar pay day working at RT so she invents some bullshit and makes a dramatic exit in hopes it would give her some cred with the be corp so-called news networks that would be willing to pay her the kind of money and celebrity she is greedy for.

Wow.

They recognize we do make a difference, we are being heard.

I'm going to take that as a compliment.
