The enduring genius of The Avengers and Patrick Macnee

Patrick Macnee has died at the age of 93. Here Dick Fiddy pays tribute to the TV series that made his name

It seems incredible that The Avengers is more than 50 years old, and more incredible still that it shows little sign of fading away as most of its contemporaries have done. Despite the failure of the Hollywood movie version, the television series enjoys a vibrant afterlife, with regular repeat screenings, video and DVD releases, sales of memorabilia and umpteen articles in the many magazines dedicated to fantasy film and television.

Undoubtedly part of the enduring appeal of The Avengers lies in the fact that it features fantastical storylines and takes place in an England that seems to exist entirely separately from the real world. For this reason, although it first appeared in 1961, The Avengers seems less dated than many of its rivals of the time.

Nothing on netflix (just the cartoons), youtube has a few shows, hulu has the series from 1961 (think that's when it started) but hey when did regular hulu (not hulu plus) go to wanting to be paid?  phooey on that "start your free week now".
